Douglas Kerr, member of the Rotary Club of Dalbeattie in Scotland, will be climbing to the highest point of Scotland’s 93 inhabited islands. Partly out of adventure, but with a goal of raising donations for three charities; Mary’s Meals, Dumfries and Galloway Befreinding Group and for charitable works for this Rotary Club.

Kerr will be our Live Streaming Speaker on December 7 at 5:30 p.m. He will be discussing the project, the charities it will support and the logistics of getting to all 93 inhabited islands in Scotland. Put it on your calendar and share on your timelines as this is open to the public. By the way, it will be 11:30 p.m. for Kerr, but he is willing to join us at this time.

The three Rotary Clubs of Oshkosh sponsored a get together and mini fund raiser for World Polio Day Oct. 24, 2016.  At the Ground Round in Oshkosh, we were selling "Polio Shots" for $5, of which $4 went to PolioPlus.  Others put in donations to avoid the side affects of these "shots".  Fun evening, and building awareness that we are not done yet.

Even as parts of Haiti were still recovering from a catastrophic 2010 earthquake, Hurricane Matthew tore through the impoverished island country Tuesday, leaving hundreds dead and many more homeless.

The Category 4 storm has affected an estimated 330,000 people in Haiti, including 6,400 who have been moved to temporary shelters. Extensive damage to main bridges and other transportation networks have left some areas cut off and vulnerable. Torrential rains have resulted in flooding and landslides. And contaminated water supplies threaten to lead to a surge in cholera cases and other waterborne illnesses.

A ShelterBox response team of volunteers from Canada, England, New Zealand, and the United States traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, Friday to assess the damage and decide how best to help people. ShelterBox, an independent charity, is Rotary's project partner for disaster relief.

ShelterBox has limited supplies available in Haiti and is working with the Dutch navy to bring more from nearby storage sites. The charity is also exploring a partnership with ACTED, a French nongovernmental aid agency, which ShelterBox has worked with in the past.

"We are exploring every option to get aid to Haiti as quickly as possible," says Chris Warham, chief executive of ShelterBox. "Working in partnership could give us more flexibility and capacity to reach isolated communities in the country."

With wind speeds reaching 155 miles per hour, Hurricane Matthew is considered the worst storm to make landfall in Haiti in more than 50 years.

For this weeks On Line meeting content, I have links to three articles, which can be found in the Home Page Down Load Files section of website.  Just look in far left column at the bottom, the three files are linked there Or here.
All have the same theme, what do Gen Y and Millennials look for before joining a service organization. The bolding, underlining and highlight color are all mine.
One quote that stuck out for me was "this generation first looks at a problem in the world and then find a solution they can support through their service."
As think about repositioning our Club with an idea of flexibility in Service Above Self, I think these three articles are great ways to start the discussion.  The following link will take you to the Group Discussion page on FB.  Lets talk during the week in the Group discussion.
After reading, please go to this link to record your participation for the week.
Again, you can do this reading anytime during the week, complete the form using the above link to record your participation.

This week's On Line meeting content is below.  Remember you have the entire week to participate.
We have something new that will be used here for the first time. You will be asked to complete the Form below when you have participated this week.
Click on link here: after you have participated.  Ryan will use this form to update participation records.

The E-Club of Southern Scotland is a new E-Club.  The video below (click on Read More...) was their first monthly speaker Sammi Kinghorn, wheel chair racer.  They are mostly an On Line club for most of their meetings.
What I want us to review is the format and the impact this meeting format.  This was the format that I thought our Club would use to bring in interesting speakers from anywhere in the world.
Some background, this meeting had over 45 viewers live from 9 different countries, 8 different time zones.  Quite impressive.
While this meeting was conducted LIVE, I would see no reason why we could not do similar for our Monthly Speaker meeting.  Those that can make it great, but if we could record for viewing by other members during the week at their convince, one of the strengths of our Club format.
The video below is 37 minutes long and they all talking in the Scottish brog, a bit hard to understand at times.  Please take particular attention to the first five minutes as they do the introduction.  Then pay attention again starting at 26 minutes when they start the Q&A for the speaker. Even if we could have a few members Live to ask these types of questions I think would add a lot of texture to the speaker.
Also, by using this format generally, I think we would not have to be ashamed of the size of the Club as it is now.  They would know that the potential reach is much greater than those LIVE.
Creating a body of this type of recordings of speakers could allow us to offer more flexible make up meeting for Rotarians throughout the District.

I'm going to open the Group Discussion for this week's topic if you would like to make a comment during the week.
The link to the group is here:

The main service project for our club was named the FOUR R Book Project.  At the end of last year we re-branded the service project Book Bridges.  Still same project, we raise funds to purchase new, age appropriate, books for children of prisoners.  The books are given in the incarcerated parents name to the child.  The goal is to bridge connection between parent and child, bridge academic achievement for these kids.
We will be at the Oshkosh Farmer's Market again this Saturday, Feb. 13 selling used books we have collected to raise more funds for the Book Bridges service project.
